The cemetery was called Fag el-Gamous - which literally means 'the Way Water Buffalo', as the name of the street near the cemetery.
The findings come a team of archaeologists Uncle Sam after a long research in a number of pyramids around the cemetery for about 30 years. During this period, they found more than 1 million mummies.
Location of the structure, the scientists believe that the millions of mummies were buried in about 1,500 years ago when the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire ruled Egypt from Ages 1 to 7 century AD.
"We believe this cemetery is a place for more than 1 million mummy. The place is very spacious and 'solid'," said Chairman of the archaeologist who is also Professor in the Field of Ancient Book of Brigham Young University, Kerry Muhleistein.
The exposure Kerry conveyed in his presentation at the event Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities Scholars Colloquium in Toronto, November 2014 ago.
He explained, the funeral is not the final resting place for kings or nobles, but ordinary people. For millions of mummies buried without a coffin. "I'm not sure whether the mummy in this place are those who also was mummified or embalmed in bulk," said Kerry.
Archaeologists also found a number of valuable items that allegedly belonged to the mummies. For example, linen, mirror, and colorful shoes. "There are many things that they had a price and put in this grave."
Furthermore, said Kerry, other findings are no child mummy mummies buried with some adults. Small mummy was wearing a necklace and two bracelets on each arm.
Researchers suspect that the little mummy is a 18 month old baby girl. With the way the bodies were so maximum burial indicates that the family is very fond of the boy.
"We found evidence that they tried to embalm the corpse to the maximum. The fingers and toenails, tongue and brains preserved extraordinary," said Kerry. "They managed to do it perfectly. Funeral beautiful for the boy."
