Ever heard of Medusa ? Snake -haired Greek mythological creature can turn people into stone . In the Basilica Cistern , Istanbul , you can see the statue of the head of Medusa in underground drains .
Istanbul has a heritage that is no less important to the other buildings in this city . Basilica Cistern , water reservoirs built in the 6th century it was an important relic of the Byzantine Empire .
Basilica Cistern is a reservoir of water to a depth of 70 m and a length of 150 m , which was built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian . When it is the most prosperous era in the Byzantine Empire .
The building covers an area of ​​9,800 m2 which is supported by 336 pillars with 12 rows each row consisting of 28 poles . The place is surrounded by a wall thickness of 4 m . The water contained in the forest where this came from Belgrade which is located 19 km from the city of Istanbul . Since 1987 , this place was opened for visitors as one of the world heritage .
