Worry about losing independence, Poland refused, Hitler told his generals on May 23, 1939 that the reason for attacking Poland was "Danzig is not an object. For us, it is the widening of living space (Lebensraum) in the East." To scare Hitler, Britain and France announced that the invasion of Poland means war, as well as trying to convince the Soviet Union to work together in this action. Moscow seems to agree but realizes that he can master the Baltic states as well as parts of Poland if allied with Germany, so the Soviet Union into an agreement in August 1939. Efforts to London failed, because Hitler did not estimate the widening war.
