Shook central Chile.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 8.3 shook central Chile, Wednesday (09/16/2015) local time. US seismology agency said the quake triggered tsunami warnings in force until Peru and evacuation in coastal areas. So far there has been no reports of injuries or major damage. US Geological Agency or the United States Geological Survey (USGS) called shallow quake was magnitude 8.3. According to the USGS, the quake was centered about 228 kilometers from the capital Santiago.

The epicenter was at a depth of eight kilometers and struck at 19:54 local time (or Us at 5:54 pm). USGS also said two aftershocks have occurred and reported a magnitude above 6.0.

Chilean authorities themselves called the tremor was magnitude 8.0. Tremors felt in Buenos Aires, in Argentina, some 1,400 kilometers from the epicenter, while a tsunami warning applied across the coast of Chile and Peru Pasisfik beach. An AFP correspondent reported that thousands of residents who fear in Santiago, a city with 6.6 million people poured into the streets.

In April last year, a deadly quake measuring 8.2 in northern Chile killed six people and forced one million people to leave their homes in the area around Iquique. On February 27, 2010, earthquake that struck off the coast of the Maule region, Chile, recorded a magnitude 8.8. The quake was recorded as one of the largest ever. The quake killed more than 500 people and caused damage worth 30 billion US dollars.

An earthquake measuring 8.3 magnitude shook the coast of Chile. Five people were killed, while thousands of others displaced. Reported The Mirror. The death toll among them a 26-year-old woman by a falling wall collapsed. The rest died of a heart attack shortly after the quake. The quake shook buildings in the nation's capital, Santiago, about 280 km to the south, and caused flooding in some coastal areas that get a tsunami warning.

President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, is planning to visit the area worst affected by the quake. "Once again we have to deal with another harsh blow of nature," Bachelet said in a television interview with reporters in the country. The local television stations show the panic the people in the street shortly after the largest earthquake since 2010 it happened. They seem clustered along the road with damaged buildings on the left and right of the road.

Chile, one of a number of countries in the world that has the most active seismic level, has been hit by three major earthquakes with a magnitude of 8.0 or more in the last five years. The first earthquake occurred in February 2010. A total of 525 people were killed, including those who died in the tsunami that arise as a result of the quake. However, in the recent earthquake, Wednesday (09/16/2015) local time, which with magnitude 8.3, so far, only 11 were reported killed.

Why the death toll is much lower this time?

The latest quake was not as strong as the previous earthquakes. Although is quite strong, with a 8.3 magnitude quake on Wednesday was just let go about a third of the energy released by the magnitude 8.8 earthquake in 2010, one of the strongest earthquake ever recorded in modern times (magnitude quake measured in a logarithmic scale).

The latest earthquake impact on a more centralized area

In 2010 an earthquake occurred off the coast of central Chile and direct overwrite large cities and densely populated areas, including resort areas are crowded with tourists. At least, one third of the country's coastline suffered significant damage from the tsunami triggered by the earthquake, and a smaller damage was reported in San Diego and Tokyo. Almost all of Chile experienced a power failure. In contrast, the earthquake and tsunami on Wednesday only an impact in less densely populated areas, Coquimbo.

Coastal residents are better prepared

Since the earthquake of 2010, there are a lot of exercises and simulations anticipate earthquakes. Evacuation route had been marked clearly. As a result, although the tsunami from the latest quake caused extensive physical damage in several coastal cities and ports, only a few people who are in danger when the waves came. In 2014, when an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.2 struck off northern Chile, residents in coastal areas were evacuated quickly and efficiently.

Warning issued immediately

In 2010, there was no tsunami warning was issued, and a number of national leaders prematurely told the public that they are able to return to their homes. Residents in coastal areas know where to go to higher ground, but many visitors or tourists who do not. Since then, the government has issued a precautionary tsunami warning immediately, and had far more warnings given so that all sounds obvious, as seen in 2014 and the earthquake last Wednesday uproar it.

Rules about the quality of applied building

In poorer countries and developing countries, such as Haiti, Nepal, or Indonesia, large earthquakes are often very deadly. Thousands of people were killed by the collapse of buildings, bridges, and dams. Back in Chile as well as it is. However, the prosperity that occurred in recent decades have raised construction standards, and the country has learned through experience that it is difficult to regulate and enforce the rule of strict construction and safety, as applied in California. Therefore, modern buildings in Chile tend to be more resistant to earthquakes, though the historic building and located in rural areas may still be vulnerable.

Improved emergency response reaction

Since 2010, the National Seismic Center of Chile has been operating 24 hours. Sea level monitoring system more robust and better procedures to help coordinate the efforts of public and private institutions have also made a difference.
