Before the Indonesian nation is using the name Indonesia was the nation's past we have had another name that has been known to many people.

There are some other names in the past Indonesia include:

Indies.

Indian names are the creation of Herodotus, a Greek national expert historical science (484-425 BC), known as Father of History. The new Indian name used for these islands, by Ptolemy (100-178 BC), a famous geographer. And this Indian name became famous after the Portuguese under the leadership Vascvo da Gama discovered the islands by along the Indus River, in the year 1498 AD.

Nederlandsch Oost-Indie

This name was given by the Dutch people after they came to power here. Later the name was exchanged with "Netherlands Indies". As is known, the Dutch first came to Indonesia in 1596 under the leadership of Cornelis de Houtman.

Insulinde

This name was given by Multatuli (Multatuli) in his book Max Havelaar in 1860, then the name was popularized by Professor PJ Veth. Multatuli make this new name, because he was disgusted to hear the name given by the Netherlands Indies Dutch. The origin of the word is derived from the word "Insulair", "Insula" and "Indus". Insula in Latin which means island. Indus means Indies, while Insilinde means Indies island.

The name was created by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1869, after he made a visit to our homeland, from 1854 until 1682.
