In a recently published journal " Science Entomology " , Dr . Shin - ya Ohba describes unusual behavior and role reversal when the giant water insects become predators and feed on the young turtles in the ditch in the area of central Japan .
Kirkaldyia deyrolli , or giant water insects , of the family often spotted gnawing Lethocerinae small vertebrates such as frogs and fish , Ohba has been capturing images of insects that eat small turtles and snakes .
Ohba when performing sampling at night in the central Japan region , western Hyogo could record images of the giant aquatic insects prey on the turtles in a pond . These insects are known only attack moving prey . K. deyrolli is an insect native to Japan and is registered in the Japan Environment Agency as an endangered species .
They live mainly in rice fields throughout Japan and eat small frogs and fish . These insects can grow up to 15cm in length and reaches a venomous bite .
