Often associated with seizure control , violence , prison riots are extreme way in which prison inmates voice their grievances against the head of the prison authorities . The inmates believe that the only dissent that could get the attention of the public and the government . Some riot in history has made corrections practitioners take action to prevent such activities occur .
New Mexico prison.
New Mexico prison riot , which took place on 2 and 3 February 1980 against South State maximum security prison of Santa Fe , is one of the most violent prison riots in the history of the American penal system . 33 inmates were killed and more than 200 inmates were treated for injuries .
