Janis Joplin was a singer with an amazing voice and was dubbed the queen of rock n 'roll first. He is a charismatic figure, and pave the way for other female singers in rock music to thrive.
In the mid 1960s, San Francisco is a cultural mecca in the music competition. There are many kinds of raises superstar Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead and Santana. However Joplin along with other female singers has raised many doubts whether they can play music like other male musicians.
Singer-songwriter Tracy Nelson admitted that the 1966 period was very difficult for female musicians.
"Many say to me, Why do you want to do this?
It's not a business for women. "Why are you not at home alone and find a man?" Nelson said.
And in the same year Janis Joplin tried to break through a paternalistic culture (social systems that prioritize men) in San Francisco.
"I have to follow Janis Joplin, and I stood out there listening, and I just thought," man is a force of nature, "said Nelson.
Joplin was like a group called Big Brother and The Holding Company, which is virtually unknown outside of San Francisco at the time.
Then they played the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967.
Among the 1,200 journalists covering the festival is the music critic Robert Christgau, who later wrote for Esquire magazine.
"I remember her playing in the sun," he said, "and everyone was really not only happy but kind of flabbergasted at how intense it is."
"I remember playing in the sun," he said, "and everyone was really happy, but not just as dumbfounded."
Like most white musicians at the time, Joplin trying to sing like a black blues musician. Christgau says that this actually does not look convincing. On the other hand, he blew the audience with emotion emotional voice.

Joplin grow and thrive in Texas. He was born is not the same as the 1950s the typical young woman. He was fat and had bad skin.

Not surprisingly, Joplin found an outlet in the blues - especially in artists such as Bessie Smith, Lead Belly, and Big Mama Thornton. As he says in the Cavett show, singing is the only way he could express how he felt.
"Playing is just about feeling," said Joplin. "It is not always about suffering, it is not about happiness.'s Just about letting yourself feel all the things you already have in you, but trying to get rid of because they do not make for polite conversation.'s The only the reason I sing cause I get up there and just let everything out "
