When the storm passed, for 27 hours they flew down to the speed of 14 kilometers per hour as challenging wind direction. After successfully penetrating, speed increased to 145 kilometers per hour.
Many birds migrate to fly thousands of miles per year . They were flying over land, sea, and it turned out, they were able to fly through the storm.
Bryan Watts , director of the Center for Conservation and Biology , College of William and Mary , Virginia , United States attach satellite transmitters to Whimbrel birds to monitor their movements during the last 3 years .
" These birds breed in the area near the North Pole . Though they are foraging in the northern region of South America, around Venezuela , near the Amazon , " said Watts .
That is , Watts said , they fly long distances and perform incredible flight . " Birds are tracked even flew 3,500 miles (about 5,600 kilometers ) nonstop from Alaska to Virginia , " he said .
" He was moving at a speed of 55 to 65 kilometers per hour for 5 full days , " said Watts .
Watts says , so far , observers want to know what happens if a bird amid a storm blocked . For that , they put a tracker on a larger bird , the bird Hope . Birds were fitted with tracking fly from Nova Scotia and met with tropical storm Gert .
" When the storm passed by Gert , for 27 hours , they flew down to the speed of 14 kilometers per hour as challenging wind direction , " said Watts .
" Having successfully weathered the storm , cruising speed to 145 kilometers per hour because it got a boost from the wind storm," he said .
Watts said investigators have yet to find what makes them able to fly uncannily like that. To be sure , when they arrive at their place looking for food , they only weighs 350 to 400 grams . But during the next 3 weeks , the weight they gained 50 percent .
" When they return home , they are like a ball of fat that stores energy in an amount sufficient to make long-haul flights , " said Watts .
" It appears that these factors that allow them to cope with the strong winds that long, " he said .
Watts said the one thing they learned after installing a satellite transmitter on this bird is , despite wading birds such far distances , but they rely on one small area at a specific area .
" If we damage the ecology of the region , then it will give a huge impact to bird populations that utilize these areas to breed , " he said .
