There is a new breakthrough in the treatment of leukemia, a blood cancer that is difficult to treat and usually fatal. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia has been genetically modified T cells patient's immune system, turning it into a cell "serial killer", which is then directed to eliminate blood cancers.
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL, characterized by an increase in white blood cells slowly, called B lymphocytes, B cells produced by the bone marrow, the spongy tissue inside bones that also produce red blood cells. In the end, the cells of healthy blood pressured by B cells that proliferate, the patient underwent bone marrow damage, and - without a bone marrow transplant - died.
Healthy bone marrow transplant from a donor has been the only treatment and potential cure for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. However, it is very difficult to find a match and many CLL patients died while waiting. Even with the transplant, experts say only about half of CLL patients who survived during the procedure.
Three patients with CLL who had no treatment options again chosen to be tested at the University of Pennsylvania. The researchers genetically engineered one of their immune system cells, T lymphocytes, to attack the cancerous B cells.
Carl June, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the university Abramson Cancer Center and lead author of the study, said, "The test is actually far exceeds the allegations and our estimates, because we found the three patients have anti-tumor response beyond regular and large number of leukemia cells have been eradicated in three of these patients. "
Two of the three patients with CLL in remission of their disease and cured, and no improvement in the patient third.
T cells genetically modified using a harmless virus, which carries an antibody called a chimeric antigen receptor or CAR. Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system in response to infection.
CAR engineered to bind to another protein called CD19 which appears on the surface of normal B lymphocytes.
Scientists say that the modified T cells, injected into patients after standard chemotherapy, included on B cells in the bone marrow cancer, any T lymphocytes capable of killing thousands of tumor cells.
