All three species of cassowary cassowary ie wattle Single ( Casuarius unappendiculatus ) , Cassowary wattle Double ( Casuarius casuarius ) , and Little Cassowary ( Casuarius Benetti ) .

Cassowary Double wattle .

Cassowary Double wattle which can also be found in the northeastern part of the Australian continent .
Cassowary bird has a body size that is very large , except for the Little Cassowary ( Casuarius Benetti ) is a smaller body size .

Single wattle cassowary .

At the top of his head cassowary has a high horn lightly browned . Females are similar to males , and usually larger and more dominant .
In cassowary Double wattle there are two red wattle on its neck with a blue neck skin . While the Single wattle cassowary ( Casuarius unappendiculatus ) , as the name implies only one wattle .
Cassowary which include endangered animals from extinction consuming fruits that fall from the tree . Cassowary bird normally lives alone , and paired only during mating season only. Cassowary chicks brooded by the male .

Little Cassowary .

Although the cassowary has a great body , but apparently not much is known about the endemic birds of Papua . Especially for Single wattle species of cassowary ( Casuarius unappendiculatus ) and dwarf cassowary ( Casuarius Benetti ) .

Habitat and Deployment .

Single wattle Cassowary ( Casuarius unappendiculatus ) and dwarf cassowary ( Casuarius Benetti ) is a species endemic to the island of Papua ( Indonesia and Papua New Guinea ) , while the double wattle Cassowary ( Casuarius casuarius ) apart in the islands of Papua are also on the island of Seram (Maluku, Indonesia) and northeastern Australian . Cassowary bird habitats have in lowland forest areas included in the swamp .

Population and Conservation .

Cassowary bird population is not known with certainty but is believed to be from day to day has decreased . Medium dwarf cassowary ( Casuarius Benetti ) given conservation status of Near Threatened ( Near Threatened ) . The threat of extinction due to poaching Cassowary much better for mendpatkan meat , feathers or eggs .
Cassowary is one of the wildlife Act and has the potential to be developed and cultivated as farm animals . Adult cassowary can reach a height of 1.3-1.8 meters and weigh around 60-75 pounds . The number of eggs per mating season ranges from 2-6 points , but more often between 2-4 grains . Although these animals are protected by law , but are still common poaching for meat , eggs and feathers from these animals .
If this situation continues, without any proper supervision and control , it is an endangered species . This situation will be further accelerated by the presence of forest clearing for transmigration settlements , or industrial estates , which causes habitat destruction .
One of the government's efforts to overcome this is to conduct breeding bird fauna endemic Papua , including the cassowary at Bird Park and Orchid Garden Biak . Breeding is an effort to protect and develop wildlife outside its natural habitat . In animals in captivity can lead to environmental changes from the wild to be
limited , including changes in the process of adaptation and eating and mating behavior .
But until now cassowary breeding success rate at Bird Park and Orchid Garden Biak not optimal, due to the limited information about the cassowary in Indonesia , especially on eating behavior and mating are very supportive of the process of monitoring and handling of reproduction cassowaries . Therefore, it is necessary to study or research patterns of eating and mating behavior in captive cassowary as a reference in the cultivation business .
Adult cassowary feathers jet black , stiff and short . While children cassowary feathers pale brown with longitudinal stripes from head to tail dark brown . Coat color changes from brown to brown striped plain occurs at the age of about 6 months later from brown to jet black color after reaching adult age is about 4 years old . Cassowary has a certain territory and living areas are solitary except in mating season and when caring for children .
Cassowary classified as diurnal animals are doing activities during the day . Cassowary in the wild woods to explore on their own ( solitary ) or with their children or in pairs during the mating season . In the mating season when the animals are nervous and ready to attack anyone who is around him . Towards the beginning of the season and mating , males and females began approaching the current frequent fights between the male cassowary for females .

Cassowary breeding .

Meeting of male and female mating season , usually in the territory or in the dining area of the female cassowary . When the female cassowary cassowary has received the stud male will follow the female keeps so seen in pairs , but instead when the female refuses the male will be expelled . Expulsion is more common during the off-season mating . Cassowary females generally larger than males . Cassowary is one species that perform marriage with polyandry system .
Cassowary female will mate with more than one male cassowary.
After spawning , the female cassowary would leave their partners and will seek and be making out with another male cassowary to be fertilized in the next spawning . The older the female cassowary territory more widespread , more and more aggressive partner when making out so that more derivatives .
According to Coates (1986 ) , the mating season cassowaries double wattle ( Casuarius casuarius ) is generally from June to October but is most common in July and August , while the single wattle cassowary (Casuarius unappendiculatus) mating period occurs during the summer and lay eggs in June. Mating period on dwarf cassowary ( Casuarius Benetti ) occurred at the end of the rainy season or month of March and April . Cassowary males and females occupying certain territories during spawning .
Females lay 3-6 greenish eggs in a nest made of leaves at the base of a tree , then the females go into the forest, leaving the male to be incubating , maintain and defend their children from predators . For approximately 7 weeks of incubating eggs and the male is busy keeping his son after hatching .
If the incubation time is there is interference or threat from the outside then the male will soon run into the forest , trying to divert the attention of predators on the eggs or the precious children .
